What Qonto actually is

Qonto is a payment institution authorised by the ACPR in France; its banking licence application is still pending. It serves operating companies in France, Germany, Italy and Spain with local IBANs and accounting-ready exports.

It is the least friction option if your bookkeeping is done locally: sub-accounts, receipt matching, supplier payment approvals and direct exports into the tools local accountants already use.

Best for
Operating companies in France, Germany, Italy and Spain

Where it works well

  • Local IBAN and accounting exports built for the market
  • Fast, predictable onboarding
  • Sub-accounts and approval flows for supplier payments

Watch out for

  • Very EUR-centric with weaker multi-currency coverage
  • A payment institution, with a banking licence still pending
  • Transfer allowances are tight on the cheaper plans

Who can open it

  • A company registered in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands or Portugal
  • A local IBAN requires a registered address in a supported country
  • Holding companies with no operations are reviewed case by case

Documents to prepare

  • Certificate of incorporation and company registry extract
  • Passport and proof of address for every director and owner above 25%
  • Description of the business, customers and expected monthly volumes
  • Local registry extract such as a Kbis or Handelsregister print
  • Articles of association
