What Airwallex actually is

Airwallex holds payment or e-money licences market by market, including with the MAS in Singapore, the FCA in the UK and ASIC in Australia. It is not a bank in any of them.

The strength is the stack: collection accounts in 20+ currencies, a payment gateway, corporate cards and spend controls, plus an API. It is a natural fit for a group incorporated in Asia-Pacific that sells into several markets.

Best for
Ecommerce, marketplaces and groups collecting in many markets

  • Strong Asia-Pacific coverage and local entity licensing
  • Free entry plan in most regions

Watch out for

  • Onboarding asks for detailed flow-of-funds evidence
  • EU free plan requires a held balance
  • Not a bank, so funds are safeguarded rather than insured

Who can open it

  • A registered company in a supported market, most commonly HK, SG, AU, UK, EEA or US
  • Clear flow of funds documentation for the collection currencies you request
  • Regulated and high-risk sectors reviewed case by case

Documents to prepare
